Introduction

Halloween can be a stressful and dangerous time for pets if proper precautions aren't taken. From toxic candy to frightening costumes, here are essential tips to keep your furry friends safe during the spooky season.

1. Keep Candy and Decorations Away

Chocolate and xylitol (a common sugar substitute found in candy) are both highly toxic to dogs and cats. Keep all candy bowls well out of reach and remind trick-or-treaters and family members not to share sweets with pets. Decorations like candles, fake cobwebs, and small items can also pose choking and fire hazards.

2. Keep Pets Indoors

With doors opening frequently for trick-or-treaters, pets can easily escape. Keep dogs and cats in a secure room away from the front door. Ensure all pets are microchipped and wearing ID tags in case they do get out. Black cats in particular face increased risks around Halloween.

3. Be Careful with Pet Costumes

If you plan to dress up your pet, try the costume on well before Halloween to ensure they're comfortable. Never leave a costumed pet unsupervised, as loose fabric or accessories can pose choking or entanglement risks. If your pet shows any signs of stress or discomfort, skip the costume entirely.
